It’s Time to Register for Summer Camps!

Summer Camp registration is heating up! If you haven’t decided on which programs your children will attend this year, now is the time to do it. I’ve done posts over the years with links to camps both in the Atlanta area and sleep-away camps that Chase has loved or friends have recommended. Whether your children want to experience sleep away camp or they’re involved in a sport and want an intensive day camp experience, there are a lot of options, many of which are convenient to Vinings and Buckhead.
Chase loves water sports so he will be attending Camp Seagull-Seafarer’s seamanship program in North Carolina this summer. Another draw is that they are affiliated with the Coast Guard, so all of their boating activities are overseen by USCG licensed captains.
He’ll also be attending a day camp that is new to Atlanta that he’s really excited about. I2Camp is for middle school students and is all about science, technology, engineering, and math. It is really interesting and special and I’ve never seen anything like it. Sessions will be at the Westminster Campus.

There are also specific sports camps- I’ll list several recommended camps below- as well as theatre and nature camps. Georgia Tech is offering an information expo on February 18 with a lot of information about their summer youth camps as well as a resource guide for other Atlanta-area camps.
Sadly, I just found out that one of Chase’s favorite rustic camps is no longer in operation; Josh Powell Summer Day Camp posted the following on their website: “We would like to thank you for your support in making Josh Powell Day Camp a success for 43 years! We were delighted to be able to run camp for three years after Josh’s passing in 2011, and now it is time for us to bring the camp to a close. There were few things that Josh enjoyed more than running camp, getting to know you and your children, and introducing the campers to the wonders of the outdoors and Georgia Red Clay.   He delighted in seeing the children of former campers come through each summer and hearing your stories on Parents’ Days. He was able to lead a life that he loved because of your support through the years. Thank you for being a part of it. The Powell Family
Chase attended for 3 years and made a lot of great memories there.

Atlanta Homeowners Speak: Ideas For Building Your Dream Home

I’ve been part of a really great discussion on Facebook about what people want in their dream home. Whether you are building your dream home from the ground up or renovating to enhance your existing home there are a lot of decisions to make. I decided to compile the advice and experience from the discussion because I think they have come up with a lot of great ideas. Real estate purchases are some of the biggest investments most of us will make in our lifetimes and great vision and planning will go a long way in making your house a home. I’m going do a series of posts with these ideas and I hope you’ll weigh in with comments, via email, or on my Facebook page with the things that make your home a dream.

I’m starting at the beginning with the big “whole home” items and I’ll be posting more over the next few weeks with advice for your dream kitchen, master suite, and outdoor living:

Let’s start with the big picture, the Whole House decisions:

  • One of the first things to choose are plumbing fixtures. The fixtures you select may have proprietary stems and valves in the wall and the plumbing rough-in happens early in the build. So the style and brand will need to be selected early.  Working with a great designer will guide you in making those decisions and getting the proper valves in the proper locations early.
  • Lighting:
    • A good electrician that can also provide lighting design advice really helps (especially in a large house you want great lighting!) Make sure you have a plan in hard copy.  It will help you down the road and if you ever sell the house as well if someone wants to make changes.
    • Skylight tubes are great for natural light.
  • Smart house technology:
    • System controls lights, AC, security, and surround sound from an iPad or tablet.
    • Centralized AV panel for the whole house including outdoor lighting, audio, and security.
    • Remote app access via tablet or smartphone to control security, HVAC, etc.  I’ve recently installed “Nest” systems in my house and love the fact that I can change the temperature in my home from my cell phone.
    • USB charging stations built into outlets.
    • USB outlets in bedrooms, kitchen and office
    • Pop up outlets in the kitchen that are hidden until you need them.
    • I’ve seent outlets so disguised in tile you can’t find them.  I’ve heard its costly, but it sure is beautiful. This one below is a bit raised, I’ve seen them totally flush, but can’t find the picture right now.  Houzz is a great resource for pictures of ideas.

  • Floors:
    • Everyone agrees – Heated floors throughout! They were said to be costly upfront but a total money saver over time by lowering heating costs and much healthier (especially for anyone with respiratory issues of any kind)
    • People love hardwood, bamboo and cork flooring not only for the look but for ease of cleaning and helping with people with any allergies.
    • Cork is forgiving on the knees, back, and feet and like hardwood, cork can be stripped and refinished. One commenter said she preferred a lighter finish on cork because her darker finish showed nicks, scratches from dogs and every bit of dust.  It’s the look currently, but will need refinished so much sooner.

  • Storage:
    • Adjustable closet shelving in utility closet and kids closets. ELFA shelving from The Container Store was mentioned as a great option. It is able to adjust in kids closets for when they grow and as their needs change. Beautiful adjustable shelving can be pricey but it makes a large closet glamorous too.

    • Max out your main floor storage! Make the steps into drawers, built–ins around the fireplace, banquette storage, mud room closets. Think about how much stuff you use and like to have within reach on the floor you do the most living in.

    • Soft close drawers and cabinets.
    • Christmas tree closet – slide the tree inside fully decorated after Christmas and then brings it back out next year.
    • Shelving built in between the studs (rather than built ‘out’)
    • Outlets in the fireplace mantle for Christmas decorations
  • Elevator and handicap accessibility planning:
    • Retired but very active friends didn’t put an elevator in when they built their dream home but they designed the house to accommodate one later as needed. Can’t hurt to plan ahead!
    • All the doors were built wide enough to be handicapped accessible but were trimmed out to normal widths for resale. If they find they need it, they can take the trim down and voilà!
  • Stair treads that are wider than builder grade are important- architects will automatically plan on builder grade measurements but wider stairs are a huge safety and comfort issue.
  • Pocket baby gates around stairs. It’s like a pocket door but it’s a gate instead.  Also, helps with pets.

  • Green Design:
    • Geothermal HVAC is incredibly energy efficient and doesn’t dry the air out as much in the winter (in part because it’s electric heat), and utility bills are SO low. Add the option to condition the air to prevent itchy skin in the winter.
    • Solar panels
    • Tankless water heater- never run out of hot water again!  May need several in various areas in large houses or you’ll need a mini tank to give you instant hot water in all locations so you won’t be running the water and wasting that while you’re waiting for hot water!

Multiple tankless (or instant) water heaters are great in larger homes. photo credit: solicits.com

    • Nontoxic paints
    • Dual flush toilets throughout the house – a great water saver
    • Closed loop or gravity plumbing
    • Whole house humidifier to keep winter air comfortable.
Take advantage of southern sunshine to be green and help reduce energy bills.

Take advantage of southern sunshine to be green and help reduce energy bills.

  • Full house water filtration with carbon filter
  • Whole house generator: a must during the aftermath of ice storms or windstorms!
  • Central vac system
  • Redirect all gutter to a tank for irrigation.  There are systems out there that help you conserve water for outdoor use.
  • Laser air cleaner in HVAC system that makes air in the home super clean.
  • Mud room with hooks for storage and shoe bins and closets. Add a chalk board or magnetic message board to keep track of activities.
  • Drying racks in laundry that are fixed to wall for hang dry. Flat drying racks that pull out in laundry for sweater drying. Big laundry sink for messes.
  • I’ve written about solid wood garage doors here before and I still think they were a great choice for adding a lot of curb appeal and value to my home.

Take a look at Real Carriage Doors' website and consider upgrading your doors if they are visible as I think it will add value next time you go to sell your home.

  • Pets:
    • Built-in dog crates
    • A raised shower in the mudroom area – like the ones they have at dog washes – so you can bathe your dogs (without killing your back) on their way back inside if they are muddy, etc.

  • Pestban is a system installed in the walls they can be serviced from outside that keeps out bugs and pests
  • Recommended resources: ‘The Not So Big House’ that has less to do with size than how to use space that meets your family’s specific needs
  • Professional designer up front to help with your interior colors and fixtures.
  • Smart house systems installation.

Now it’s your turn; what advice do YOU have for building your dream home?  We’ll be bringing you more on specific rooms soon, but its been so much fun to get everyone’s ideas!  Head over to my Facebook page to join the discussion.

Main Event, a New Atlanta Birthday Party Option

BDays_Header_700x180

Parents, there is a new indoor play venue that opened up near us on just a couple of months ago that I wanted to tell you about. Main Event Entertainment in Atlanta is right below the AMC theatre on Cobb Parkway inside the perimeter and has bowling, laser tag, rock climbing, gravity ropes, an arcade with lots of games for kids and a sports bar (with some happy hour specials) for adults where they can catch a game on TV or play pool while the kids go play. With the weather getting so cold, it’s a great spot for birthday parties or just an indoor play day. The first time we were there was for a birthday party and the boys could run wild and play laser tag several times.  You no longer need to be at a party to play, just sign up!  They are running a Winter Funpass special that starts at around $15 per session right now which gives you unlimited access to a lot of their activities.  I’ve had several friends who have been there at least five times in the last couple weeks and I’ve heard nothing but good things.  I actually got to sit at a counter and have snacks and watch a football game while the boys played.  Of course they were checking in quite often as they always wanted more money on their play cards!

I wrote a post  a while back about all the birthday parties I’ve planned for Chase over the years and I think I’m going to add this one to my list. His birthday is in October so while I usually have warm-weather outdoor options, I also need to keep an indoor option in mind in case it’s chilly and this place covers a pretty broad age range (it’s amazing how fast they grow up and won’t fit in a bouncy house anymore!). So if your kids have an upcoming birthday or just have a lot of energy to burn and not enough square footage in the house to corral them, Main Event is a fun close-by option.

[UPDATE] Lights, Camera, Action, Y’all!

In my recent Lights, Camera, Action, Y’all! post, I talked about the booming Atlanta film industry, but it looks like that post just scratched the surface of what’s going on here in Georgia! I just ran across an article that lists more than 25 TV shows and movies being shot around Atlanta in December. Productions range from reality shows like VH1’s Love and Hip Hop Atlanta Season 4 and Bravo’s Married to Medicine to hour-long scripted dramas like  The Walking Dead and ABC’s Resurrection to feature films with A-list casts like The Phenom with Ethan Hawke and The Accountant starring Ben Affleck. Move over Beverly Hills, when it comes to “swimming pools and movie stars” it sounds like Georgia is really the place you want to be!

Happy Thanksgiving!

We’re about to enter the whirlwind of the holiday season – in fact, it has already felt like Christmas time in Atlanta this week – Brrrrrr! I’m so glad that  Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season because it gives me a chance to pause and reflect on all of the things that I am deeply grateful for before all of the exciting business of the season begins. Here are a few of the things I’m thankful for:

IMG_0683Its Fall and we’re heading into Thanksgiving week, so I only thought it appropriate that I post what  I’m Thankful For:

1. Our health – after losing a few young friends this year to terrible diseases, I am ever so mindful that we need to be thankful for our health.

2. My son’s education – every time I am at my son’s school I am reminded how lucky and blessed I am that he is able to get the quality education that he receives and it reminds that I want to help those that aren’t as fortunate to allow their children to prosper.

3. Continued good business.  After so many terrible years in real estate, 2013 and 2014 have been a blessing and one I hope continues for not only my benefit but my clients who are able to make transitions in housing without a financial hardship.

4.  A supportive broker – this business can be tough and as an independent business person I’ve never realized the benefit of a great broker until this year.  For the first time since I’ve been in real estate I feel like I have a partner versus someone who just cares about taking a chunk of my money.  It is truly a win-win relationship.

5.  My friends, family, and neighbors – as a single mom I hear others talk about how hard it is when their husband works late hours or is on a business trip, but many of them don’t work.  I get by daily as the sole provider for my family with the help of my friends and neighbors. Even though I don’t have family nearby I have their support just a phone call away. I have friends and neighbors that are happy to swing by and pick up my child with just a text or phone call and a resilient son who doesn’t worry if Mom is later than planned, he knows she’s probably with a client.

6. My village – this is part of the friends and neighbors, but even more its familiarity and tradition.  I realize as the Holidays approach and my son is now 10 years old that the things we have done for years in Vinings such as the Halloween party, Vinings Tree Lighting etc are becoming part of his “story” and life and it brings him comfort and a sense of home.  Even though I am occasionally tempted by a great deal on a house somewhere else it comes down to whats best for my son and the comfort of the known outweighs the perks of another house or location.

7.  Flexible time – one of the reasons I went into real estate was to allow myself to have a “life”.  Little did I realize that life would require working every single day with no real time off EVER!  But the benefit of that is I can schedule around things at my son’s school and can participate in things that most Moms who don’t work can do and then I just end up on my computer til midnight making up for it, but I can do it all that way. Plus this career has allowed me to have flexibility and be the best Mom I can be for my sweet little boy.

8.  My dogs – as my parents lost their much-loved Boston Terrier  – Suzy this year I am reminded how much unconditional love comes from my 2 fellas.  The help me appreciate nature as they like to take walks and sniff everywhere they go.  My littlest one is truly my shadow and they are both at my feet while I work from home on many days.

9. Reliable service providers – this may not make sense to many, but I do feel blessed to have people who I can trust to help me with maintaining and enhancing my house.  My gardener, handyman, painters etc.  I own a rental property and have my house and without them I would be overwhelmed with tasks that could be difficult to manage.  I feel comfortable leaving them a key and I know the work will get done.  I haven’t always had this comfort, I am grateful to have it now.

10. Technology – again this may seem like an odd thing to be thankful for, but technology truly allows me to communicate with many more people than I could in years past.  Prior to the advent of everyone on email we’d have to spend hours a day calling people to arrange for appointments, follow up on showings etc.  Today things are pretty instantaneous and I can see when someone is entering a listing or text an agent to get feedback or email a client about a showing, allowing me to be much more productive than in years past.

And the most important of all, I am thankful for my son,  this coming week reminds me of my journey to Russia 9 years ago to bring him home.  Each day of the Thanksgiving week brings a different memory and I reflect on it each year.  My Mom travelled with me on both trips and she remembers each day as if it was yesterday as well.  We boarded the flight to Kemerovo on Sunday and arrived on Monday and by the following Saturday after Thanksgiving we were back in Atlanta with a new baby boy!  I know many agents remember that time as well as I think everyone in Buckhead and Vinings was following my journey.  We didn’t have WordPress back then, but I did an early version of a Blog on Google 360.  I’ll have to see if I can still find it, it was sporatic as it wasn’t always easy to find internet access back then in Siberia, but it still captured a lot of what was happening to us daily.  So reflect on what you’re Thankful for this Thanksgiving and I hope it will be a wonderful one for you and your family as well.

As a little Thanksgiving bonus I thought I’d add that I’m grateful for this season of hospitality too, a time to reconnect with friends and family over a special holiday meal. Here’s a recipe for a traditional Southern party favorite, cheese straws. These are great for guests to nibble with a glass of wine and they would also be a great way to show your gratitude to your holiday hosts!

Southern Cheese Straws
Makes about 4 dozen pieces
Ingredients
  • 1 2/3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or more to taste
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 8 ounces extra-sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons water
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
2. Sift together the flour, salt, dry mustard, and cayenne pepper. Put the butter and grated cheese in a mixing bowl, and mix for several minutes, until thoroughly blended. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter and cheese, and mix until completely incorporated. Add the water, and mix for one minute longer.
3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface, and knead five or six times. Roll the dough out 1/4 inch thick, and cut into strips 1/4 inch wide and 4-6 inches in length. Place the strips on ungreased cookie sheets 1/2 inch apart, and bake in the preheated oven for 12-16 minutes, until golden brown and crisp. Cool completely, and store in airtight containers.

Atlanta Private School Open Houses

It’s that time of year again- no, not pumpkin spice latte season, private school application season! Atlanta’s premier private schools are holding open houses beginning this month.  Attending a school’s open house is a great way to get a feel for which school will be the best fit for your child’s education. Placement can be competitive, so it’s a good idea to get those applications in shape and in to Admissions as soon as possible. Here’s a tip: since 6th grade is the more common expansion year into middle school, applying to schools for the 5th grade year can increase your odds of acceptance and allow your child to settle into a new environment before the transition into middle school and doubled class sizes that begin in 6th grade.

Here are some upcoming open house dates to keep in mind:

Whitefield Academy has a number of open house dates throughout the coming months; you can see which time best fits your schedule at their calendar  here.

You can also find helpful links to the school’s main websites on my Private Schools tab.

Lights, Camera, Action, Y’all!

Atlanta’s booming film industry has brought a flurry of A-list stars to Buckhead recently. Ryan Gosling, who is filming the ‘70’s noir “The Nice Guys” with Russell Crowe was spotted out enjoying dinner at the Buckhead Diner last weekend. They have been filming all over town including the retro fabulous Sandy Springs home of Dallas Austin (where Justin Beiber stayed while he worked on a recording project earlier this year).

Marvel is filming “Ant-man” downtown in mid-November, superhero fans! The film is starring Paul Rudd as a man who can change sizes and communicate with insects. And speaking of superheroes, former superheroine and Cartersville native Chloe Moretz (who was Hit Girl in the film “Kick Ass”) is filming “The Fifth Wave” on location in Ansley Park.

And for fans of ‘80’s comedy, Ed Helms of “The Office” is back in his hometown of Atlanta doing a sequel to the Griswald’s “Vacation” to Wally World. He’s playing the role of a grown-up Rusty Griswald with Christina Applegate cast as his wife. I hear that while their roles will be small, both Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo will be making an appearance. They’ve been filming around Midtown and in Charlotte NC.

It sounds like there will be more of this in our area as Tyler Perry Studios expands with its purchase of property in the decommissioned Ft MacPherson and Jim Jacoby builds the huge Atlanta Media Campus and Studios in Gwinnett, slated to be the largest movie complex outside of California.

If you’re looking for a little of the “lights, camera, action” yourself, here’s a casting call I recently heard about: Looking for wealthy philanthropists, business owners and CEOs for an inspirational, uplifting primetime hour-long series for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The ideal families should live in the Atlanta area, have at least one 7-12-year-old child and would be able to assist another family in need. If you have everything in life money can buy and feel like giving back to a hard working family who had their run of bad luck, please apply here:  http://www.nbc.com/casting#htohl
